What is Tai Chi?
Tai Chi is slow moving physical exercise, that is geared around health and wellness. It is often referred to as moving meditation.
Tai Chi incorporates good posture, balance, coordination, breathing and mental focus.
We have a few rules at AFC716.
Rule #1 is by far the most important.
“If it hurts, DO NOT do it. We will find a way around it!”
Tai Chi is meant to help heal the body not hurt it. So if a movement feels uncomfortable or hurts, stop and tell us.
Rule #2 is equally as important.
“Don’t worry about what you don’t remember”.
Tai Chi is practiced to reduce stress. We “lather, rinse and repeat” until you feel good before we move on.
Is Tai Chi a Martial Art?
Technically yes, it is. We practice the health form of Tai Chi which moves slowly and with good posture and form. The punches and kicks are done in the air and very slowly. Kate often refers to Tai Chi as “Sloth Fu”.
Can I Do Tai Chi?
Of course, you can! Tai Chi is beneficial for all ages. Many of our participants are retired. They are looking to learn something new. We have participants who are recovering from knee replacements. They use Tai Chi in conjunction with their PT.
We have participants who have had a stroke, or a TBI and are using Tai Chi to help them regain balance and memory.
We also have participants who want to remove the impact from their workouts to be “kinder” to their bodies and everything in between.
We have a place to sit if you need to rest during class. You are still learning even if you watch for a bit.
The hardest part is walking through the door for the first time. After that, you can accomplish anything.
What Are Classes Like?
We have at least two instructors in every class. We try to keep the groups small. This allows us to have a group of newer participants at the same time as long-time learners.
We warm up together as a whole group and then we will break into smaller groups. You will review what you have learned, and most times learn one or two new movements per class. It’s a two-way street. We encourage feedback. We want to know if you need more review or if you would like to move a little quicker.
We end class all together, so the newer students get to see what comes next in real time from people just like them. We each have a unique style of teaching, we switch groups weekly so you get the best of all of us
